The triptych is an artwork, such as painting or photography that is comprised of three panels, pieces or objects. A triptych can create a sequence, communicate a narrative, convey an unfolding idea or express a continuing thought. It can also display distinct elements that binds a theme in an artwork or highlight different elements of the same subject matter. A triptych is also used to break a whole artwork into three or to merge three pieces into a unified whole. In essence, the triptych, as in the number 3, divinely represent the union of harmony, wisdom and understanding.
