Engraving

The term engraving applied collectively to the various processes of cutting a design into a plate or block of metal or wood, and to the prints taken from these plates or blocks. In everyday usage, the term usually refers more specifically to one of the processes, known technically as line engraving. In a different sense, the term ‘engraving’ is applied to the incising of designs on stone, especially in prehistoric art.
