A medium refers to the materials or art supplies used to create a work of art. Fundamentally, medium is whatever an artist uses to make a mark upon his surface. It is the mode, method, style and means of expression employed by the artist to create his work. Be it a drawing, a sculpture, painting, literature, or music, the mode the artist tactfully uses is referred to as the medium.
When an artist chooses a mode of expression to create his or her work, his skillful, creative and ingenious employment of medium is what allows him to convey his ideas, communicate his concepts, convey his emotions, deliver his convictions, birth his vision and liberate his feelings. The medium is the mediator. It translates and transports the artist’s precepts, didactic teachings, intuitions and purposes from his mind to his chosen surface.
