Altarpiece

An altarpiece is a sculpture, a decorated wall, screen, picture, or a combination of any of these standing on or behind a usually exalted altar in a religious sanctuary, for example, a Christian church. Greatly varying in sizes and conception, altarpieces range from tiny portable pictures (usually painted and framed in gold) to huge structures and assemblages that embrace the fields of sculpture, architecture and painting.
