Ground

Ground is the surface to which paint is applied, or the material used to create that surface. The ground of a painting is usually prepared on its support. Traditionally, oil paint on canvas use a ground of oil and white pigment, and on wood surfaces, either an oil ground or gesso.



Other types of ground that can be used for painting include: plywood board; masonite board; cardstock paper; animal hide; parchment paper and metal sheet.
